Just across the water from Bald Head Island and Southport is Oak Island, a narrow strip of land that is separated into two beach communities – Caswell Beach and Oak Island.

The merger of the towns of Long Beach & Yaupon Beach created the Town of Oak Island in 1999, best described as a family-oriented beach with over ten miles of coastline on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other.Oak Islands beach strand is positioned to face south, which makes for gentle surf, moderate tides and spectacular sunrises and sunsets. For the sun, sand, and sea enthusiast, Oak Island extends the public unmatched access to the beach, Intracoastal Waterway and Davis Creek with more than 60 public beach accesses, three fishing piers, a marina, two public boat/canoe ramps, 2 educational centers, bike paths, numerous picnic areas, walking and canoe/kayak trails and an extensive sidewalk system.Park areas are provided for the use of residents and visitors. Middleton Park has a playground and playing fields for various sports such as baseball, basketball, and tennis. Schuster Park is a very peaceful area to watch waterway traffic from the newly constructed pier. The Scenic Walkway spans Davis Creek offering a close-up view of wildlife and vegetation.

Growth has prompted the Town of Oak Island to expand its Town limits to include the commercial district on the mainland approaching the Oak Island Bridge. Oak Islands residents and visitors enjoy a robust business district consisting of varied retail stores which offer interesting and friendly shopping, a golf course, medical facilities and offices, numerous restaurants, churches, the Brunswick county Airport and the G.V. Barbee, Sr. Oak Island Branch Library.
